China tightens screw on Big Tech with new data protection law

China has strengthened its resolve against Big Tech in the country with a new law which restricts companies’ abilities to collect consumer data.

The new bill, coined the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) lays out the first-of-its-kind comprehensive list of rules around the collection, process and protection of its consumer data, which was previously legislated by flimsy laws.

While the law hasn’t been published yet according to the state’s media, there are several drafts which have now been passed.

One of which stated that companies must receive user consent when collecting data and that users will be able to withdraw the consent at any time.
