Shopify has announced a “record-setting” Black Friday, with total sales of $2.9 billion from independent and direct-to-consumer businesses worldwide.

Together, merchants on Shopify generated peak sales of nearly $3.1 million per minute at 12:02 PM EST on Black Friday and crossed $1 billion in sales by 4:00am EST, four hours earlier than Black Friday in 2020.

This also represents a 21 per cent increase from Black Friday in 2020, when Shopify sales soared 75 per cent over 2019 due to Covid-19 lockdowns.

The Canadian e-commerce company also revealed that 72 per cent of sales were made on mobile devices versus 28 per cent on desktop, an increase from 67 per cent of sales made on mobile and 33 per cent on desktop in 2020.
