The retail industry, from some angles, seems in the midst of a dystopian nightmare, with uncertainties overwhelming fundamentals, disruptors changing the game and huge amounts of money being invested in building up e-commerce and brick-and-mortar stores.
With all of these changes, even some major retailers have not been able to withstand the headwinds ushered in by a new era of retailing. Since the start of the year, at least 15 major retailers have filed for bankruptcy, including The Limited, Wet Seal and rue21.
