Retail sales had a surprising lift in January, driven by shoppers taking advantage of online deals post-Christmas, according to ONS.
Non-store retail, which predominantly comes from online retailers, experienced a sales rise of 2% in January, with promotions boosting activity.
Despite the sales rise, the proportion of retail sales made online fell to 25% in January, down slightly from the 25.7% in December.
However, this remains significantly above pre-pandemic levels with ecommerce accounting for 19.8% of retail sales in February 2020.
