Beijing has hit back at Walmart, calling the retailer ‘stupid’ over its reported boycott of products made in Xinjiang.
Chinese consumers recently accused Walmart of removing the goods produced in the province, where China has been accused of detaining over a million Uighur muslims in detention camps and forcing many to work in factories with little to no pay.
China denies the claims and says that these camps are terrorism rehabilitation centres instead.
A Walmart-owned Sam’s Club representative attempted to cool the situation by telling Chinese analysts that products from the region were not deliberately being removed, calling the accusations “a misunderstanding,” according to a report from Reuters.
