In today’s increasingly eco-conscious consumer market, businesses must navigate the challenge of making effective and honest green claims while avoiding the pitfalls of ‘greenwashing.’ The importance of this endeavor can’t be understated, as misleading green claims not only deceive consumers but also damage a company’s reputation and undermine genuine efforts to tackle environmental issues. To assist businesses in this complex landscape, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) published a comprehensive guide titled “Making Environmental Claims” in December 2023. This guide aims to help businesses make truthful and evidence-based environmental claims, thereby fostering fair competition and encouraging innovative solutions to reducing environmental impacts.

To further assist the retail sector, the National Retail Association developed a “Best Practice Guide for Environmental and Sustainability Claims.” This best practice guide is more than just a set of recommendations; it is a detailed framework compiled with the expertise of National Retail’s ESG Committee. It outlines governance processes and key principles that businesses should follow to make legitimate green claims. The guide provides specific advice on integrating green claims cohesively with other marketing strategies, lists clear dos and don’ts, and offers numerous practical retail examples illustrating compliant claims. Though it received positive feedback from the ACCC, formal endorsement wasn’t possible, emphasizing that the guide’s reliability is well-regarded within regulatory circles.
