Amazon is shutting down Alexa Internet, its internet tracking service that is unconnected to the ubiquitous voice assistant.

The service tracks the popularity of different websites by monitoring traffic as users navigate the sites. The site extrapolates this data through web users who use its browser extension software and from sites who directly install its traffic monitoring software.

Alexa is best known for Alexa Rank, a ranking of the world’s most popular websites, with this data often referenced in news coverage.

In an announcement post, Alexa.com said the company stopped offering new subscriptions on December 8 2021 and will shut down on May 1 2022.
