Ecommerce sales prevented a collapse in household spend in the first quarter of 2021 according to logistics expert ParcelHero.

The study by ParcelHero found that household spending fell significantly from January to March year-on-year and it was only the meteoric rise of online sales kept most retailers afloat.

The latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) Consumer Trends report revealed household spending tumbled 11 per cent in the first quarter of 2021, compared to the same period last year.

The figures show that hospitality was the hardest hit industry, with spending on meals and accomodation collapsing by 63 per cent year-on-year.
