December’s collapse completes online retail’s lowest ever growth

Online sales growth tumbled by 12% year-on-year in December, its lowest figure since March when lockdown comparisons were still affecting the rate, according to data from IMRG.

IMRG’s Online Retail Index, which tracks online sales for 200 retailers, showed that growth for 2022 came in at -10.5% year-on-year, which was by far the lowest growth ever recorded for a year and the first time it has been negative.

Black Friday growth turned out to be flat, which was better than expected and an improvement on the low demand of the previous 10 months, IMRG said.
